"Marrying Absurd" by Joan Didion

The author in this essay affirms how Las Vegas is taking away the real meaning of this sacred ritual, in regards to the weddings. She starts out by first describing the reason for the increase in Las Vegas marriages. Then, she goes on to describe how Las Vegas marriages have taken away the special meaning a marriage and a wedding ritual has on a person, by getting weddings done in that short amount of time. She describes weddings in Las Vegas a joke; because she sees that there weddings are quick and easy. Also, assumed that weddings in Las Vegas are a kind of business, because she states that is a way to get money easily.

She believes that Las Vegas weddings are lacking style and beauty; and that Las Vegas wedding is not a respectable way to get married. Honestly, in my concern it doesn’t matter it depends what the couple prefers, because some likes a shorter weddings, others larger; some likes expensive, some not. The reality is that it doesn’t matter, because anyway a weeding is a wedding, the only principle is if there’s love, everything will be always beauty, and important.

"The Lie Detector" by Lewis Thomas

He argues how the body’s central nervous system overcomes someone that is lying. He says the lie detector gives him hope that the world is all right despite the overwhelming reasons for discouragement. The essay raises the question as to why a person would want to use a lie detector. According to the author he says that “a human being cannot tell a lie, even a small one, without setting off a kind of smoke alarm.” I’m agreeing with the author in that point, but what about people who tell a lie calmly. It means that they are not lying?. For that reason, I have another point of view about it.

In my opinion lying is a psychological aspect. All is in the mind. People who lie usually get nervous and shake and the heart pulse a lot. That's one characteristic of lie. But there are people who don’t present these characteristics while lying. However, the fact is that there’s no machine that can detect lies. This kind of machine works with the changes in blood pressure, perspiration rate and breath rate. It does not measure the truth while telling it. The interesting of this kind of machine is that if you are telling the truth; but you have a variety of medical condition such as colds, headaches, muscular problems, or simply high pressure problems. Therefore, the machines give the result as you are lying and that is not true. Incredible right.

"Why We Crave Horror Movies" by Stephen King

In this essay the author tries to demonstrate that the modern day horror movie are relief of violence, and are made of adrenaline and fun, also it could produce nightmares over us. The author uses horror movies because of their nature. Yes, it can be related to our real life in many ways, but horror movies are not the only thing that could feed the violence. Video games, domestic violence, and is bad companies are some examples of those things that could feed the violence nowadays. Therefore, I’m disagreeing with the author in this essay, because I don’t think that horror movies are the causes of the high percentage of violence in our society. Even he states that all of mankind is mentally ill, and this illness is controlled through horror movies in a variety of ways.

In fact, People get their knowledge for what they are learning, not for what they are seeing. In addition, people have the ability to analyze the events in the life, and are able to recognize the difference between the good and the bad things. So, it means that way they will create their own criteria to recognize events in the life, and in the same way they will form as a person intellectually.

Neat People vs. Sloppy People by Suzanne Brit

In her essay Britt delivered her purpose of distinguishing her opinion of the difference between sloppy and neat people. However, in my opinion, Britt a statement, assuming that all neat people are lazy and mean, they don’t care about process, they are bums and clods at heart, are especially vicious with mail, and etc. Others consider sloppy people to be the lazy ones. In general, this was a contrast to her explanation of neat people. Her essay contains 3 important aspects that are: definition, repetition, and comparison.

In her essay she shows a positive attitude towards the sloppy people, because in her description of "sloppy people" she describes positive facts and statements about them; as for example, she said: “Sloppy people carry in their mind’s eye a heavenly vision, a precise plan that is so stupendous, so perfect, it can’t be achieved in this world or the next”, but reality is that she tries to makes sloppy people sound nice and caring with what they have. That is basically her opinion about these kinds of people.
