"The Lie Detector" by Lewis Thomas

He argues how the body’s central nervous system overcomes someone that is lying. He says the lie detector gives him hope that the world is all right despite the overwhelming reasons for discouragement. The essay raises the question as to why a person would want to use a lie detector. According to the author he says that “a human being cannot tell a lie, even a small one, without setting off a kind of smoke alarm.” I’m agreeing with the author in that point, but what about people who tell a lie calmly. It means that they are not lying?. For that reason, I have another point of view about it.

In my opinion lying is a psychological aspect. All is in the mind. People who lie usually get nervous and shake and the heart pulse a lot. That's one characteristic of lie. But there are people who don’t present these characteristics while lying. However, the fact is that there’s no machine that can detect lies. This kind of machine works with the changes in blood pressure, perspiration rate and breath rate. It does not measure the truth while telling it. The interesting of this kind of machine is that if you are telling the truth; but you have a variety of medical condition such as colds, headaches, muscular problems, or simply high pressure problems. Therefore, the machines give the result as you are lying and that is not true. Incredible right.
